Shanghai Food

People 6 Reserve first, you’ll get a password to get in the door and this saves the embarrassing wait as you try to crack the code to enter. Sound scary? Don’t be frightened, the door gimmick isn’t nearly as bad as the bathroom trick (push on the opposite side of the door handle). Worth it for the sautéed spinach… Address:150 Yueyang Lu, near Yongjia Lu Phone: 6466 0505 Fu 1088 Like Shanghai itself, Fu 1088 is modern, experimental and forward thinking but hasn't lost touch with its roots. Contemporary Chinese cuisine with Western influences is served in a stately, classic, tucked away villa on the edge of Jing'an District Adress:375 Zhenning Lu, near Yuyuan Lu Phone 5239 7878 Best dim-sum restaurant: Din Tai Fung Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese chain, but don't hold it against them. Their versions of Chinese snack food -- dumplings, noodles, steamed buns, and simple vegetable dishes -- are impeccable, as is their highly-trained service. She's got a knack for turning old  houses into cozy watering holes, and now she's turned her hand to the food of her home province. Address   Lane 49, Fuxing Xi Lu, near Wulumuqi Lu  Di Shui Dong One of the most popular Chinese joints for locals and foreigners alike, this Hunan-style restaurant is always  packed despite a cafeteria-sized main dining area and at least a dozen "private" rooms. Yunan food

Lost Heaven Specializing in the tribal cuisine of China's Yunnan province, Lost Heaven has all the makings of a proper date  restaurant: exotic cuisine, enchanted decor, atmospheric music and dim, flickering candlelight. Address  38 Gaoyou Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu Phone   6433 5126

Sichuan food

There are 26 private rooms and seating for twelve million, and they manage to get  authentic, complex, spicy Sichuan cuisine right for just about all of them. The chuanbei liangfen -- a misleading rice "jelly" on the menu -- and the tea-smoked duck are among the... Address 3/F, Zhaoshangju Square, 333 Chengdu Bei Lu, near Wei.. Phone  5298 0438
